Primary Function:

Reporting to the IA Director, the Major Gift Officer (MGO) is responsible for developing strategies for the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors with special focus on five figure gifts to support MIM programs and initiatives. Essential functions and primary duties include the following:

  • Create and execute fundraising strategies to meet annual revenue goals;
  • Work with an established donor pool to secure gifts and build relationships with newly acquired donors
  • Cultivate and steward individual donors toward giving upgrades and longevity leading to major ($10,000 and above) and planned gifts;
  • Work with available research tools and resources to identify high capacity donors to develop appropriate major gift prospect strategies;
  • Execute annual plans and participate in forecasting and analysis of giving trends to anticipate future revenues.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a portfolio of individuals (at least 100) with focused strategies to engage and secure five figure major gifts from those with an identified giving capacity of 5-7 figures.
  • Create solicitation and cultivation plans targeted to meet annual fundraising goals for all membership levels of $500+; develop associated fundraising strategies to support MIM programs and initiatives.
  • Identify, qualify, cultivate and steward donors to secure philanthropic gifts through face to face visits, written solicitation letters, formal proposals, and other engagements as appropriate.
  • Conduct introductory discovery visits with new members to establish relationships and gather basic information for moves management; develop donor-centric approaches to focus on matching interests and programs.
  • Serve as an internal advisor to colleagues as to best fundraising practices and work as a partner in developing fundraising plans for approved MIM projects and initiatives.
  • Ensure a transparent, coordinated, and collaborative approach with MIM leadership, team members, and volunteer team members to augment cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors and prospects.
  • Work to foster IA’s commitment to building a culture of philanthropy.
  • Work with IA operations specialist to conduct semi-annual portfolio review and adjust assignments according to level of donor activity or high priority assignments.
  • As a contributing team member, work independently and employ creative approaches to solving complex problems and building strategic solutions.
  • Facilitate and support donor education sessions, special events, Legacy Circle activities, etc.

Skill / Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Track record of maintaining relationships with donors and determining the optimal scenario for successful major gift solicitation.
  • Rigorous knowledge and application of fundraising and stewardship practices
  • Database applications and working knowledge of SalesForce CRM is a plus. Strong in Microsoft office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to promote fundraising and strategic priorities by developing productive working relationships with all MIM team members
  • Stewardship and relationship management skills with meticulous follow-through.
  • Ability to distill complex programmatic information into succinct and compelling fundraising messages
  • Persuasive communication with excellent presentation and listening skills; ability to articulate the MIM vision to a variety of audiences
  • Ability to apply high level critical thinking and creative analytical skills in problem solving; develop and articulate solutions to a variety of situations.
  • Work independently employing wisdom, reason, insight and perception to activities.
  • Collaborative style with commitment to team success.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  • 3-5 years’ solid experience in nonprofit fundraising and development, and/or similar revenue generating professional position
  • Possess a full range of knowledge and practice related to prospect identification and development and new donor acquisition, particularly targeted to major gift development
  • Demonstrated achievements in securing philanthropic investments and proven success personally soliciting gifts
  • Demonstrated experience in creating and executing stewardship plans
  • Proven networking and connector skills
  • Experience with database and prospect management tools.
