Position Title Business Development Director
Position Summary:

Collaborates with research and business development colleagues to drive the strategic disposition of technologies created and developed at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI), in particular those developed within its Calibr division. Plays a key role in management of the Office of Technology Development, monitoring existing and facilitating new strategic relationships and alliances with biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, clinical research organizations, and foundations across all of TSRI’s research areas; ensuring inventions and technologies developed at TSRI are managed and marketed appropriately to corporate partners, sponsors of the research and licensees; directing activities related to business development and managing the institute’s collection of licensing and patent agreements, and corporate sponsored research; serving as primary signatory for confidentiality agreements. Ensures awareness of intellectual property protection and technology transfer to researchers and industry.

Position Description

Primary responsibilities include:
* Evaluate TSRI technologies to identify those that have potential to be successfully commercialized, either as direct partnerships with established companies, or as the basis for start-up companies.
* Identify and successfully engage appropriate partners and/or investors for such opportunities.
* Conceive and negotiate deal terms to support these transactions
* Manage the transaction process to close deals

Additional responsibilities include:
* Liaise with inventors regarding disclosure filing, status, and patent matters
* Coordinate legal support to evaluate intellectual property, freedom to operate, and other licensing dimensions to enable business development strategies
* Collaborate with leadership to set the goals and objectives of OTD, and the overall performance of the office.
* Manage the patent budget.
* Participate in the professional development of the Technology Development, Assistant Director.
* Perform other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

* Bachelor degree in life sciences, with a minimum 10 years’ related experience, with progressive responsibility
* Candidates with advanced degrees (e.g., PhD) with a minimum of 3 years’ experience will be considered
* Supervisory experience and budgetary responsibility strongly preferred
* Exceptional analytical, verbal, and written communication skills; highly articulate in both group and individual settings.
* Strong organizational and leadership skills, with proven ability to lead, manage, motivate and develop subordinates and to exert organizational influence across key functional areas.
* Solid spreadsheet/database skills required.
* Demonstrated negotiation skills with high-impact, complex, multi-million dollar biotech and pharmaceutical agreements including the ability to gain cooperation and support of others, effectively interacting volatile personalities.
* Must also have the ability to interpret these agreements.
* Must have strong technical background for evaluating commercial potential covering a broad base of science and technology.
* A thorough understanding of the biotech and pharmaceutical industries, including the drug development and approval process.
* Working knowledge of the U.S. and international patent process.
* Understanding of the steps required in a venture start-up.
* Able to function productively as both a team leader and a team member.
* Must possess a high degree of self-reliance, flexibility and initiative, combined with excellent marketing and business skills.
